Art Therapy and the NDIS – Is It Eligible for Funding?

Art Therapy and the NDIS - Is It Eligible for Funding

What is Current Status of Art Therapy & the NDIS

Art therapy has long been recognised as a powerful tool for enhancing emotional wellbeing, improving social connection, and building everyday life skills. For people living with disability, it provides a safe and creative outlet to express emotions, explore identity, and build confidence. Along with supporting physical, cognitive, and social development.

The NDIS and Art Therapy – Where Things Stand in 2025

Recently, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has released several statements reviewing the funding of music and art therapy:

Matching You with the Right Home – and the Right Team

  • November 2024 Statement: The NDIS confirmed art and music therapy remain available if stated in a participant’s plan as “reasonable and necessary,” but they don’t meet evidentiary standards for classification as ‘therapy.’ The Evidence Advisory Committee will assess their evidence base.
  • March 2025 Review Update: The NDIS has confirmed that music and art therapy will continue to be funded for eligible participants while an independent review is completed. The review will assess how these therapies align with participant goals and evidence-based practice, with outcomes to inform future policy decisions.
  • April 2025 Independent Review: The independent review by Dr Stephen Duckett has been completed and submitted to the NDIA. Until the updated operational guidance is published later in 2025, there will be no changes to how music and art therapy are funded under the NDIS. Art Therapy remains eligible.

This means that Art Therapy IS available as eligible under the NDIS when it is linked to a participant’s goals – such as capacity building, daily living skills, and community participation.
